The WNG (Wireless Networks Group) research group has obtained funds for the new research project entitled: SuPoRtING Towards Ip-based Interconnection of Multiple Environments (SPRINGTIME)

The proposed project, SPRINGTIME, aims to design, deploy and evaluate a novel protocol architecture flexible and adaptable to interconnect in an IP-based way a physical world with a virtual one, under the Digital Twin paradigm. The key challenge is to propose an architecture suitable for any constrained device to a more complex and non-constrained device, using any heterogeneous IP-based network.

The Physical World is envisaged as the IoT ecosystem that encompasses a vast network of interconnected devices with embedded sensors and/or actuators, ranging from small, constrained devices to larger, more complex systems like vehicles or drones. On the other hand, cloud services and platforms will make up the Virtual World. It offer data storage, data processing such as simulation, machine learning, and visualization, allowing to make data-driven decisions. These platforms also enable remote device management and security.

The communication network will make possible the interconnections in both directions between the physical and the virtual worlds, based on a new all-IP protocol stack architecture, optimized for power saving.
